  3. APRS consists of the .EXE file and dozens of MAP, HISTORY and README files,
  4. all ZIPPED up with DIRECTORIES into a single large APRSxxx.ZIP file. This is
  5. distributed with PKUNZIP.EXE and this README.NOW file on a 1.4 Mb HD disk.

  7. For folks with only 720K floppies, I have made a smaller APRSxxx_.ZIP file
  8. by removing small neighborhood maps etc and placing them in XTRAxxx.ZIP.
  9. Both of these files will be included on two 720K floppies.

  18. Despite the 2 Mbyte size of the whole APRS system, (mostly maps), a minimum
  19. system can be built in under 300K with only the .EXE, MAPLIST.APR, and one
  20. .MAP file.

  22. I am also not trying to keep track of all small maps in every state.  There
  23. should be an APRS MAP COORDINATOR for your state. Find him...
  24.  
  25. APRS will run on any PC,XT or AT machine with standard CGA,EGA, or VGA graphics
  26. interfaces.  If you have a Hercules Video card, run SIMCGA P first to make it
  27. simulate a real CGA device. This works, but poorly.  It only costs $25 to buy
  28. a better VIDEO card!  I have heard from some folks that the graphics does not
  29. work on some of the new monochorme VGA laptops!  Can someone tell me what is
  30. the problem?  APRS uses QBasic SCREEN 8 and SCREEN 9 types.

  33. TO INSTALL APRS on your SYSTEM:               DOS COMMAND
  34. --------------------------------------------  --------------------------------
  35. 1.  Create APRS directory on your Harddrive-  MD APRS
  36. 2.  Change Directory into that directory   -  CD APRS
  37. 3.  Put APRS disk into B and change to B   -  B:
  38.     Do Pkunzip with directories:           -  PKUNZIP -d  APRSxxx.ZIP  C:
  39.     (don't leave off the C: at the end!)
  40. 4.  Execute APRSxxx                        -  APRSxxx
  41.     a. Give your call and other info as prompted.
  42.     b. Move cursor to your exact QTH using arrow keys and PgDn (shft-PgDN)
  43.     c. Hit INSert key and answer QTH questions
  44.     *. OR, use INPUT-FIX command to enter your Lat/Lon directly
  45.     d. Use UNPROTO command to set your VIA Digipeater path (needs TNC)
  46.     e. Move and center map to your area of interest and preferred range scale
  47.     f. Save a config file using SETUP Menu  (repeat steps e - g at anytime)
  48.     g. Provide your Validation number when requested during the SAVE command.
  49.     h. Have fun! READ all the README.xxx files!
  50.     i. Use the OPERATIONS-COMM mode to communicate with your TNC.
  51.     j. If you have some AEA or KANTRONICS simplified TNC's, you may need to
  52.        set EXPert ON in order for the TNC to repsond to all APRS commands

  54. 5.  If you got the 720K version on two disks, then you must also unzip XTRAxxx
  55. .ZIP also using PKUNZIP -d to load in these lesser files.  Since this
  56. brings in lots of small maps, I have included another MAPLIST.APR in the
  57. XTRAxxx.ZIP file which matches these new maps. When you unzip the XTRAxxx.ZIP,
  58. it will detect this new copy, and you should select YES to OVERWRITE the
  59. original.

  61. You should be prepared to modify the MAPLIST.APR file to select those
  62. maps of interest to you.  Remember that APRS can only support 140 active maps.
  63. So remove the * in front of the maps you want to activate, and insert * in
  64. front of those you do not need.

  66. THE LATEST APRS is posted on 410-280-2503 BBS. I will also usually post a
  67. file similar to: 403to405.zip which will contain only the files that changed
  68. in the lastest release.  Please note that this is NOT MY BBS, and I AM NOT
  69. THE SYSOP.  I also rarely check in, so DO NOT SEND ME MAIL VIA THAT ROUTE.
  70. I DO read my normal packet mail @ WB3V.MD.USA; but do not send me any mail
  71. not appropriate for the FCC rules.  Apparently a lot of BBS sysops are
  72. trapping all messages with the word APRS or TO/FROM me because they claim
  73. I cannot use amateur packet to talk about APRS...
